Sourced from Sheaffer.
1907 – W.A. Sheaffer invents a new pen filling apparatus using a lever system. This new filling system eliminates the need to use an eye dropper to fill pens; always a messy process, by putting a deflatable rubber sac in the pen barrel.
Sheaffer also eliminates the coin shaped bump common to pens of the day by using a lever and pressure bar to deflate the ink sac. He patented the lever fill system in 1908.
The First Sheaffer Pens – Patent Information
1908 – Walter Sheaffer’s patent is granted in August. Customer acceptance of the pen by local writers is exceptional.
1912- Walter A. Sheaffer invests his life savings and launches the world renowned Sheaffer brand with seven employees in the small back room of a Fort Madison, Iowa jewelry store.
1913 – On January 1, 1913 the W.A. Sheaffer Pen Company is incorporated in Iowa, with an initial investment of $35,000.
Sheaffer Fountain Pen Ink
1922 – Sheaffer introduces “Skrip” ink. This new blend flows smoothly and fills easily.
1924 – Sheaffer introduces the Jade Green pen using the Pryoxylin non-breakable plastic called Radite for caps and barrels.
Sheaffer also adds the White Dot® trademark, which remains a mark of quality on Sheaffer pens today.
1929 – Sheaffer introduces the “Balance®” Pen with a streamlined shaped.
1938 – Sheaffer introduces the “Crest” the first pen to use a plastic body with a fitted metal cap.
In 1940 acrylics were introduced into Sheaffer’s line of fine writing instruments.
Sheaffer Way – Refilling A Fountain Pen
1949 – The Touchdown® filling mechanism is introduced making the process of refilling the pen even easier. The Touchdown pen contains a flexible rubber ink sac inside a metal frame.
There is a blind cap at the end of the barrel that screws out to pull out a large shiny metal plunger. When the plunger goes down, air pressure compresses the ink sac.
When the plunger reaches the end, it moves past a seal and allows air to escape the pen (look for the tiny pinholes).
As the pressure is released, the ink sac re-inflates and sucks ink.
1950′s – Saw the introduction of the PFM™ or Pen For Men, a distinctive writing instrument.
